How to Apply for a Credit Card Online

There's never been a better time to apply for a credit card online. Thanks to the numerous security measures in place, you can comfortably insert your personal information in to online forms, submit your details, and get approved for the credit card of your choice within minutes. In some instances, you can even get your card mailed to you immediately so you can start using your new credit right away. There are hundreds of different offers available for credit card applicants of all manner, including bad credit secured credit cards, good credit unsecured credit cards, a huge range of rewards credit cards, and numerous other options.

Finding the card that's right for you

The best reason to shop for a credit card online is that you get access to hundred of cards to choose from! If you've ever received a credit card offer in the mail, you understand that not all credit cards are the same. There's plenty of differences between offers, and you will need to prioritize what features and services are the highest priority to you.

The first decision you'll likely want to make before applying for a new credit card is to decide what brand of credit card you want: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Visa and MasterCard  credit cards are the most common online, and are the most widely accepted. American Express credit cards are a great choice for those individuals with good or outstanding credit scores, because Amex (as they're often called) provides special rewards and perks for customers that pay off their bill in full. American Express cards are considered to be a prestigious symbol of financial capability and wealth. Furthermore, you can apply for an American Express Business credit card online, which means that you can take advantage of the great small business rewards that American Express has for their members. Discover credit cards are a smaller portion of the credit industry, but can offer substantial benefits to members that pay their bill on-time every month. If you're applying for your first credit card, you'll likely want to choose a Visa or MasterCard due to their high acceptance rate at nearly any merchant you do business with.

The next thing that you'll need to consider when applying for a credit card online is what sort of features you want to have on your card. Nearly every perk you could imagine is available with different types of credit cards, so finding the right choice for you may require some thoughtful consideration. Credit card rewards programs are setup to provide a variety of perks, including free air travel, discounted shopping at your favorite retailers, cash-back on your regular gas expenses, discounts on restaurants and concierge services, and much more. Alternatively, you may be able to get a slightly better rate on a credit card that does not provide a rewards program, so it can be worthwhile to evaluate your credit card usage that you expect to have and then compare offers accordingly.

The third element to consider when applying for a credit card online is the variety of fees that you may be subject to over the course of a fiscal year. For those with good to excellent credit scores, you can likely receive an unsecured credit card with no annual fees (assuming, of course, that you pay your minimum balance monthly). For those with less-than-perfect credit, applying for cards with small annual fees can be an acceptable way to gain access to credit that you didn't know was available to you.

Applying for a Credit Card Online

It's never been easier to apply for your next charge card online. You'll need to make sure that all your current personal information is within arm's reach when you start the application process. This includes details about yourself such as your full name, social security number, current address, phone number, and possibly current employer information. Depending on the credit card that you're applying for, you may be required to submit additional details about your past history, including previous employers that you've worked for and other addresses where you have resided over the last few years. If you're applying for a credit card that includes a rewards program such as airline miles, you'll want to have your account information handy as well.

One thing to make sure you check for when applying for a credit card on the Internet is the appearance of the small “lock” symbol in your browser's status bar. You can generally find that lock icon appear a the bottom right hand of your screen. When this symbol is visible, it means you are on a secured webpage, which means that the information you send to your credit card company cannot be interfered or tampered by hackers or identity thieves.
